Your camera says 1080p on the box, but what are you actually sending to the call? Webcams frequently deliver a lower resolution or frame rate than advertised, depending on the cable, the USB port, the lighting and the app. This webcam test shows your live preview and reports the resolution your camera really delivers, the frame rate it claims, and the frame rate measured from the video frames that actually arrive.

You can switch between cameras, request different resolutions from VGA up to 4K, mirror the image, take a snapshot and download it as a PNG. Nothing is uploaded or recorded. The video never leaves your device.

How to test your webcam

  1. Press Start camera and allow camera access when your browser asks.
  2. If you have more than one camera, choose the right one from the camera list.
  3. Pick the resolution you want to test. 1280 by 720 is selected by default.
  4. Check the actual resolution and measured frame rate tiles below the preview.
  5. Use Mirror, Take snapshot and Fullscreen to check framing, focus and image quality.

How the webcam tester works

Requested versus actual resolution

When the test starts, it asks your camera for the resolution you selected. Cameras are free to deliver something else if they cannot meet the request, so the tool reads the real size of the video it receives. If the two differ, you will see a warning explaining that the camera is delivering less than you asked for.

Reported and measured frame rate

The reported frame rate is what the camera driver says it is set to. The measured frame rate counts how many new video frames actually reach the page each second. In poor lighting many webcams automatically lengthen their exposure, which drops the real frame rate from 30 to 15 or less even though the setting has not changed. Comparing the two numbers makes that visible.

Camera details

Where the browser exposes it, the details panel lists the camera name, the maximum resolution it supports, its frame rate range and modes such as focus, exposure and white balance.

Laptop cameras versus external webcams

Built-in laptop cameras use tiny sensors squeezed into a thin lid, so they struggle most in low light and many are limited to 720p. External webcams have larger sensors and better lenses, and many support 1080p at 60 frames per second. If your laptop camera measures well below its rating even in good light, an external webcam is usually the most effective upgrade for calls and streaming.

Understanding your results

Actual resolutionQuality
640 x 480Basic, soft on large screens
1280 x 720HD, fine for most video calls
1920 x 1080Full HD, good for streaming and recording
2560 x 1440 and aboveHigh end webcams and cameras

For frame rate, 30 FPS is standard for calls and 60 FPS looks noticeably smoother for streaming. If the measured rate is well below the reported one, improve your lighting first.

Fixing common webcam problems

  • Black screen or no camera found. Check any physical privacy shutter, the camera function key on laptops, and your operating system camera privacy settings.
  • Camera busy. Only one app can use most webcams at a time. Close Zoom, Teams, OBS or other tabs that might be using it.
  • Access blocked. Click the camera icon in the address bar, allow access and try again.
  • Lower resolution than expected. Plug the camera into a USB 3 port directly on the computer rather than a hub, and avoid long extension cables.
  • Choppy video. Add light facing you. Most frame rate drops come from the camera struggling in dim rooms.
  • Blurry image. Clean the lens, check autofocus in the details panel, and move to at least 50 centimetres from the camera.

Why the preview is mirrored

Mirroring is on by default because it feels natural, like looking in a mirror. Other people on a call usually see the unmirrored image, so text behind you reads correctly for them. Toggle Mirror to see what they see.

Tips for looking better on camera

  • Put your main light in front of you, slightly above eye level. A window facing you is ideal during the day.
  • Avoid bright windows behind you, which turn you into a silhouette.
  • Place the camera at eye level. Looking down into a laptop camera is the least flattering angle.
  • Leave a little space above your head and keep your eyes about a third of the way down the frame.
  • Take a snapshot and review it. It is easier to spot a messy background or harsh shadows in a still image.
  • Test at the same time of day you usually call, because daylight changes a lot between morning and evening.

Picture is half of a good call. Check your audio with the microphone test and make sure your connection can carry HD video with the internet speed test. If you are setting up a new laptop, the monitor test and dead pixel test cover the screen as well.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my webcam is working?

Press Start camera and allow access. If the preview appears and the measured frame rate updates, your camera is working. The resolution tile shows the quality it delivers.

Why does my 1080p webcam show 720p?

The camera may be on a slow USB port or hub, limited by the app or driver, or reducing resolution in low light. Try a direct USB 3 port and better lighting, then select 1920 x 1080 again.

Is my video recorded or uploaded?

No. The video stays in your browser and is not recorded or sent anywhere. Snapshots are created on your device and only saved if you download them.

Why is my measured frame rate lower than the reported one?

Most webcams slow down in dim light to let in more light per frame. Adding light in front of you usually restores the full frame rate.

Can I test a phone camera?

Yes. Open the page on your phone and choose the front or rear camera from the list.

Why is my webcam image dark?

Add front lighting, avoid bright windows behind you, and check exposure settings in your camera software.

Why is my webcam not detected?

Close other apps using the camera, check the privacy switch or shutter, and allow camera access in your browser and system settings.

What frame rate should a webcam have?

30 frames per second is standard for calls. 60 frames per second looks smoother for streaming.

Is my webcam video recorded?

No. The preview stays in your browser and is never uploaded.

Great picture. Can your connection carry it?

HD video needs steady upload speed and low jitter. Measure yours before the next important call.
