Double Click Test: Check Double-Click Speed and Faults

Double-click the target to measure the gap between clicks, or click slowly in fault mode to catch a mouse that double clicks on its own.

Speed mode times the gap inside each double-click. Fault check mode asks for slow single clicks and flags any that arrive as a double.

Double clicking is something you do hundreds of times a day without thinking: opening files, selecting words, launching games. Two things can go wrong with it. Your double-click might be too slow for your system to recognise, so files refuse to open. Or, far more annoyingly, your mouse might start double clicking on its own, turning a single click into two. That closes windows you meant to select, fires twice in games and drops items you meant to pick up.

This double click test covers both problems. Speed mode measures the gap between the two presses of each double-click and shows whether your system recognised it. Fault check mode asks for slow, deliberate single clicks and flags any that arrive as a double, the classic sign of a failing switch.

How to use the double click test

Speed mode

  1. Leave the mode on Double-click speed.
  2. Double-click the pad at your normal speed, ten times or more.
  3. Read the last gap, your average and your fastest double-click.
  4. Check the log. Each entry says whether your system recognised the double-click.

Fault check mode

  1. Switch to Fault check.
  2. Click the pad slowly, about once a second, for a minute or two.
  3. Watch the Unwanted doubles counter. Any click that arrives within 80 milliseconds of the previous one is flagged in red.

How the test works

Measuring double-click speed

Every press of the left button is timed with the browser’s high resolution clock. When two presses arrive within half a second, the gap between them is your double-click time. At the same time, the test listens for the system’s own double-click event. If you double-click faster than your system’s threshold, it counts; if you are slower, the system treats it as two single clicks.

Detecting unwanted double clicks

People physically cannot release and press a button again in under about 80 milliseconds when clicking slowly on purpose. When the mouse reports a second press that quickly, it came from the switch, not from you. Worn or dirty switch contacts bounce as they close, and the mouse reads the bounce as an extra click.

Understanding your results

Average double-click gapWhat it means
Under 120 msVery quick, easily recognised
120 to 250 msTypical and comfortable
250 to 500 msSlow; may not be recognised on default settings
Under 30 msSuspiciously fast; likely switch bounce

In fault mode, zero unwanted doubles over a few minutes is healthy. One or two may be a slip of the finger. Repeated flags while clicking slowly mean the switch is failing.

What to do if your mouse double clicks

  • Confirm it: run fault mode for a few minutes and repeat on another USB port or computer.
  • Clean it: a short burst of compressed air around the button can clear dust from the switch.
  • Adjust debounce: some gaming mouse software lets you raise debounce time, which hides minor bounce.
  • Check the warranty: double clicking is a common warranty claim, and a test log is useful evidence.
  • Replace the switch: if you are comfortable soldering, replacing the switch fixes it permanently.

Double clicking in games

A switch that double clicks is more than an annoyance in games. In shooters, a semi-automatic weapon fires two rounds when you wanted one. In strategy games, one click on a unit becomes a double-click that selects every unit of that type. In Minecraft, a single hit becomes two, which some servers flag as suspicious. If you notice any of these, run fault mode for a few minutes before blaming the game or your connection. A clean result rules out the mouse; a single flag while clicking slowly is enough to justify cleaning or replacing the switch.

Changing your system’s double-click speed

If your double-clicks are fine but files still do not open, your system threshold may be too strict. On Windows, open Mouse settings, then Additional mouse settings, and adjust the double-click speed slider. On a Mac, open System Settings, Accessibility, Pointer Control, and change the double-click speed. Retest here to confirm the change.

Double clicking often starts on the left button, but any button can fail. The mouse button test checks all five buttons for bounce. The click test times every press on left, right and middle buttons during normal use. If you click fast on purpose, the jitter click test and the CPS test measure speed, and the mouse test checks tracking and scrolling too.

Why switches wear out

Mouse switches are rated for millions of clicks, but heat, dust and oxidation on the contacts can make them bounce long before that. Gaming, clicking games and fast techniques use up clicks quickly. Knowing the signs early lets you claim a warranty or replace a switch before it ruins a match.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my mouse double click when I click once?

The switch contacts are usually worn or dirty and bounce when they close, which the mouse reads as a second click.

What is a normal double-click speed?

Most people double-click with a gap of about 120 to 250 milliseconds.

What does not recognised by your system mean?

Your two clicks were slower than your operating system's double-click threshold, so it treated them as two single clicks.

How many unwanted doubles means the mouse is faulty?

Repeated flags while clicking slowly are a strong sign. One flag in several minutes may just be a slip.

Can I fix a double clicking mouse?

Cleaning or raising debounce time can help. A worn switch needs replacing, either by repair or warranty.

Is double clicking covered by warranty?

Often, yes. It is one of the most common mouse warranty claims. Keep a note of your test results.

Does this work with wireless mice?

Yes. Any mouse your computer recognises works, including Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz models.

Can I test the right button for double clicking?

Use the mouse button test, which checks every button for bounce.

How do I change double-click speed on Windows?

Open Mouse settings, then Additional mouse settings, and move the double-click speed slider.

Check every button, not just the left

Test left, right, middle, back and forward buttons for presses, hold time and bounce.
