A bounce is a second press arriving within 30 ms of a release on the same button, which usually means a worn switch.

Most mice have at least five buttons: left, right, middle (the wheel click) and two side buttons for back and forward. Games bind abilities, push-to-talk and grenades to the side buttons, and browsers use them for navigation. When one of them stops working, or starts registering twice, you often do not notice until it matters.

This mouse button test checks every button individually. Press each one inside the test area and you see when it goes down, when it comes back up, how long you held it and whether it bounced. Right-click menus, middle-click autoscroll and back and forward navigation are blocked inside the area, so you can press everything freely.

How to use the mouse button test

  1. Move your pointer into the test area.
  2. Press and release each button: left, right, middle, back and forward.
  3. Watch each card turn purple when it works, and read the hold time after you release.
  4. Click each button quickly several times to check for bounce.
  5. Check the Buttons working counter reaches five of five.

How the test works

Press and release

Every button press and release is reported by the browser with a button number: 0 for left, 1 for middle, 2 for right, 3 for back and 4 for forward. The test records the time of each and shows the difference as hold time.

Bounce detection

When a switch is healthy, a new press never arrives within a few milliseconds of a release. A second press within 30 milliseconds of letting go almost always comes from the switch contacts bouncing, not from your finger. Bounce is what causes unwanted double clicks and repeated ability casts.

Blocked defaults

Normally the right button opens a menu, the middle button starts autoscroll and the side buttons navigate back and forward. The test stops those actions inside the area so pressing a button never takes you away from the page.

Why hold time matters

Hold time tells you how long the switch stayed closed. Normal taps are usually 60 to 150 milliseconds. Holds that end on their own while you are still pressing point to a weak switch.

Understanding your results

What you seeLikely cause
A button never lights upRemapped in software, disabled or broken

Hold times very long on quick tapsSticky button or debris under the shell

When side buttons do not register

Mouse software from brands such as Logitech, Razer, SteelSeries and Corsair can remap side buttons to keyboard keys or macros. When that happens, the browser receives a keypress instead of a mouse button, and the card will not light up. Reset the buttons to default in the software, or check them with the keyboard tester to see which key they send.

Mac and Linux notes

Some systems do not pass side buttons to the browser without extra drivers. If back and forward never register on a Mac, the manufacturer’s software or a utility that supports extra buttons is usually needed.

A thorough button routine

For a full check, press each button slowly five times, then quickly ten times, then hold it down for two seconds. Slow presses confirm the button registers at all. Fast presses reveal bounce, which often only appears at speed. The long hold confirms the button stays down without flickering. Repeat the routine after a gaming session when the mouse is warm, because some failing switches only misbehave once they heat up. Keep a note of which button failed and when, since that detail helps with warranty claims.

Fixing a faulty button

  • Clean around the button with compressed air to remove crumbs and dust.
  • Try another USB port, a fresh battery, or a wired connection to rule out signal issues.
  • Update the mouse firmware and software.
  • Increase debounce time in the software if a button bounces occasionally.
  • Claim warranty if a button fails or bounces constantly, and describe which button and how often.
  • Store the mouse away from dust and spills between sessions.

More mouse checks

The double click test takes a closer look at double clicking on the left button. The scroll test checks the wheel itself for skips. The mouse test combines buttons, scrolling and tracking in one view, and the click test times clicks during normal use. When everything checks out, see how fast those buttons go in the CPS test.

How long do mouse switches last?

Quality switches are rated for 20 to 100 million clicks, and some optical switches claim more. Real life is harsher: dust, humidity and heavy gaming shorten that. Checking buttons every few months helps you catch failures early.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my mouse side buttons?

Point into the test area and press the back and forward buttons. Their cards light up if the browser receives them.

Why does my back button not register?

It may be remapped in the mouse software, or your system may need a driver to pass it to the browser.

What is button bounce?

A second press arriving within 30 milliseconds of a release, caused by switch contacts bouncing. It leads to double clicks.

Why does right-click not open a menu here?

The test blocks menus and navigation inside the area so you can press every button freely.

Can I test a mouse with more than five buttons?

Extra buttons that send standard button numbers are counted too. Many extra buttons are sent as keys instead.

Does this test work on a laptop touchpad?

Left and right clicks work. Touchpads do not have middle or side buttons.

What does hold time tell me?

How long the button stayed down. Very long times on quick taps suggest a sticky button.

How do I fix a bouncing button?

Clean it, raise the debounce time in the mouse software, or replace the switch.

Why does a side button act as a keyboard key?

Mouse software can map buttons to keys or macros. Reset them to default to test them as buttons.

Buttons working. Is the wheel?

Count every scroll step and catch a skipping wheel before it switches your weapon mid-fight.
